CONTESTS WITH PRESENT

PUPILS

Wellington College held the annual Old Boys’ Day yesterday, when past pupils tried conclusions with the present boys in various divisions of sport. Five cricket mate-lies, a tennis tournament, a shooting match, and swimming and athletic events were all contested during the afternoon. Special significance attached to Old Boys’ Day this year, because it is the sixtieth anniversary of the establishment of the college on the present site. Prominent old boys present yesterday included Dr. H. A. H. Gilmer, Wellington ; Mr. Frank D. McGovern, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Auckland; Mr. A. E. Caddick, Christchurch, formerly a member of the teaching staff; the Ven. Archdeacon Monoghan, Timaru; Mr, R. J. G. Collins, Christchurch: Mr. W. H. Denton, a member of the Board of Governors; Mr. W. W. Cook, secretary of the Old Boys’ Association: and Mr. M. F. Luckie, Wellington. Cricket Matches. Five cricket games were played between old boys and present boys. In the match with the first eleven, old boys scored 184 (Du Chateau 60, McGuire 43), to which the first eleven responded with 155 for the loss of three wickets 'fDyhrberg 62 not out. Bambini 48, Bezzant 27). Bowling fo_r the eleven. Bush took three for 51. Tolan two for 21. and Rain bird two for 25. The second eleven hit up 232 (Re.vnolds 70. Thompson 35. J. R. Smith 48, Josephson 19). to which old boys responded with 61 (McKenzie 18). Bowling for old boys, Bull took three for 26. Cording three for 22. Matthews five for 8, while for the school. Stone captured three for 20, Bardsley four for 22, and Smith three for 6. In the match with the fifth eleven, old boys totalled 136 (Simpson 62 retired, McGovern 20), to which the school replied with 232 (Morpeth 60, Woodcock 32 retired. Gray 30, Aston 27 retired). Bowling for old boys, Elias took four for 21, while for school Barrett captured six wickets. Tennis. v ln the tennis matches old boys scored decisively. The swimming events, which were controlled by Mr. J. Dighton, resulted in some keen competition, the contestants including the well-known swimmer C. E. Claridge. 3'he jubilee celebrations will be continued this afternoon, when the unveiling of a new honours board will take place.
