NEW Y.M.C.A. HUT Opened by Lord Bledisloe at Petone SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL Erected by funds provided’by members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as a token of appreciation of the work of tie Y.M.C.A. during the Great Wax, the new Y.M.C.A. Memorial Hut at I’etone was officially opened yesterday by his Excellency, Lord Bledisloe, who unveiled a memorial tablet. On arrival, his Excellency was accorded a gutird of honour members of the Hutt Valley of the R.S.A. The Mayor of Potcmjo Mr. A. Scholefield, presided at the ceremony. Colonel H. E. Avery, on behalf of the trustees, handed over the deeds of the building to Mr. J. L. Hay, president of the National Council of the Y.M.C.A.’s of New Zealand. Colonel Avery expressed regret that General Sir Andrew Russell was unable to be present. Every member of the Expeditionary Force, he said, would acknowledge the work the Y.M.C.A. had done, and they had raised a substantial sum of money to erect a building as a memorial. Replying on behalf of the National Council, Mr. Hay said he predicted that the sphere of usefulness and .influence of the Memorial Hut would be far-reaching., He hoped the Y.M.C.A. would do its part in shaping the minds of the young people to give them the right outlook in these changing days. Tribute to the generosity of the people in subscribing toward the-build-ing was paid by Mr. C. R. Edmond, who spoke on behalf of the field secretaries. After receiving the key from the national president,' Mr. W. B.' Nicholson, president of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Hut, expressed the board's thanks to all who, had assisted with the opening, ceremony and the building of the hut. Especially did he thank the men who had laid the foundation of the scheme during the Great War. The building, he said, would be regarded not only as a Y.M.C.A. hut but also as a building where every returned soldier in the Dominion would find a home and would be welcome. He looked forward to th? closest co-operation between the Y.M.CJL and the Returned Soldiers’ Association.

A dedicatory prayer was said by the Rev. J. E. Lopdell, and the Benediction was pronounced by the Rt. Rev. D. D. Scott, moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

FRIENDLY RIVALRY Petone and Lower Hutt When introducing the Mayor of Lower Hiitt, Mr. J.: W. Andrews, at the opening of the new Y.M.C.A. Memorial Hut yesterday, the Mayor of Petone, Mr. A. .Scholefield, smilingly referred, to Lower Hutt as “a suburb of Petone.” Not to be outdone, Mr. Andrews replied that at one time Petone used to be called the “big brother,” and Lower Hutt the “little brother.” But Lower Hutt had increased more quickly than Petone, and the positions were now reversed. He hoped, however, that before long the two districts would be known as the “Siamese twins.”

Arrested by Detective W. McLennan ou Saturday morning, Albert Ernest Keeble was charged in the Lower Hutt Magistrate’s Court with keeping a common gaming-house. He was remanded by Mr. W. C. James, J.P., to appear on November 7. Bail was allowed on defendant’s own bond of £5O and a further surety of £56. GARDEN PARTY Hutt Metho.dist Church A garden party, organised by the Methodist Women’s Guild, was held at the home of Mrs. Stannard Knight, Lower Hutt, on Saturday afternoon. The garden is one Of the oldest in the Hutt, and looked its best in the mellow afternoon sunlight. Delightful shade was provided by the trees, and gay azaleas of every hue intermingled with tree and giant tree-ferns. Clumps of giant forget-me-notes were in ('harming contrast with the green lawns. A large aviary, housing tiny birds of tropical plumage, aroused much interest. A stall beneath a giant sycamore, and temptingly stocked with cakes, was supervised by Mrs. Heap and Mrs. Robinson, and'the produce stall was in charge of Mrs. H. B. Shearer and Mrs Teasdill. Mrs. Ball was the convener of the afternoon-tea committee, and assisting her were Mrs. R. Aldersley, Mrs. Burgess, and Mrs. Eddie. A long teatable, set with tempting comestibles, was arranged in the garage, and tea was also dispensed on the lawn.

EFFORT FOR SCOUTS Garden Party and Dance The pretty grounds surrounding the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lynch, Totara Orescent, Lower Hutt, were the scene, on Saturday afternoon, of a gardenparty organised by the cub-mistress of the St. Bernard's Boy Scouts, Miss O. Green, In aid of that organisation. On the tennisdawn at the back, two clowns entranced the small folk with their antics, and the St. Bernard’s Boy Scout pipe band provided entertaining music. A stall in a corner of the lawn, loaded with delicious cakes, sweets, Ice-creams, and flowers,' was in charge of Miss McGoldrick. A delicious afternoon tea was set on dainty tables in the diningroom, which was gay with Iceland poppies. Later in the afternoon a number

played tennis, and in the evening a jolly time was spent dancing, playing cards and games and in community singing. Mr. A. Christie was M.C. for the dancing. An exhibition of stepdancing Was given by Miss Georgina Stirling, Miss Stirling and Miss 0. Green gave a tap-dance, as also did Master T. Lonigan. Miss C. Fitzgibbon contributed vocal items.
