The new building for the recentiyformed Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A., which is to be otiieially opened by his Excellency the Governor-General. The national council of the I.M.G.A. states that owing to the limited size of the building it will not be possible to provide seating accommodation for other than invited guests. The building, which is situated at Petone at the corner of Cuba Street and Manchester Street, is a strong, modern structure of brick, and has been strengthened to withstand earthquakes. The main entrance to the building is from Cuba Street, which, opens into a spacious, well-lighted room. On the right-hand side a portion is set aside for a boys’ library, containing a large number of suitable boys’ books. • The other part of the room will be used for”the playing of indoor sports, such as table tennis, quoits, and billiards. In the extreme right-hand corner is the office, adjoining the gymnasium, which occupies the remainder of the building. The gymnasium has an area of 50 feet by 38i feet, and will bo one of the most up-to-date gymnasiums in the province, with all the latest equipment. Two dressing"rooms, with all modern conveniences, including baths and showers, are provided at the far end- of the gymnasium, while betjveen the two rooms is a space partitioned off with sliding doors, which may be used for a stage. _ A double door on the right-hand side gives exit into Manchester Street. A noteworthy feature of the building is the fact that all material was obtained Ipcally, and the work was carried out by local tradesmen. The building designed by the late Mr. Murray Kean, and the supervision was carried out by Messrs, Atkin and Mitchell, architects. The builder was Mr. H. C. Nicholls, of Petone.
