CUSTOMS RETURNS

From Other Centres Following aro Customs returns from other centres as supplied by the Press. Association , (the Wellington figures were published yesterday) Auckland.— -Customs duties collected in Auckland for the ten monthstended yesterday show an increase of £308,414, or about 15 per cent, over those for the corresponding period last year; Petrol and tire duties yielded £50,588 more, an Increase of about-12 per cent. In October, Customs duties amounted to £235,197, an increase of £23,800 over the total for October, 1933. Petrol and tire duties yielded £48,803, an increase of £7731. Sales tax collections for the month were £57,215, an increase of £BlO2. The total for the past ten months is £500,755., Last year £321,743 was collected between .March 9, when the tax became operative, and November®), Excise on beer last month produced £ll,OOl, a decrease of £921. Jlowever, the total for ten months is £109,217, an increase of £5648. Christchurch— -Compared with October, 1933, net customs revenue, col-' lected at Christchurch during October shows a snbstaiitial increase. Following are the figures for the month,’ last year’s figures being given in parentheses:— £1342 (£820) ; motor spirit tax, £19,544 (£14,075); sales tax, £25,152 (£20,231); beer duty, £7742 (£8840). Figures for the ten calendar 1 months are: Customs, £670,825 (£095,825); beer duty, £00,194 (£00,748) ; motor spirit tax, £170.974 (£107,517) ; tire duty, ,£BOB4 (£6717); sales tax, £235,041 (£140,041). Dunedin.— With the exception of beer duty, which fell by nearly £6OOO, the Customs returns for the past month show a decided increase compared with those for the corresponding month of lust year; The figures for the past 10 months reveal an increase in revenue, the sales fax and tire tax revenue having improved by-approximately £58.000. but .in the case of the • sales tax; of course, the comparison’ is hardly of any value as the figures for last year were for eight months only. Beer duty shows a drop of £l2OO. compared with last year’s returns, a slight decrease also being revealed in petrol tax* Following are the returns, last year’s figures being shown in parentheses : Month of .
