THE RACING WORLD

KOROKIO AGAIN Big Race at Bulls SANGUINE KING’S'SIX Hack Event Won By Argument (By “Poneke.”)

A wet morning slightly shrunk the attendance at the spring meeting of the Rangitikei Racing Club,’which was held at Bulls on Saturday. However, the weather cleared before the first race, and in due course there was a satisfactory attendance. ’ As few very light showers fell during the afternoon, but on the whole the day was mild and pleasant. The gathering was excellently conducted, and nothing was lost through the maintenance of a reasonable degree of promptitude. The sum of £4517/10/- was put through the totalisator,- against £4400 in May, an increase of £ll7/10/-. . The principal event,, the Rangitikei Handicap, was won by- Mr. W. Jury’s mare Korokio, who annexed the Waverlcy Cup on Labour Day. Sanguine King beat Royal Routine in the sprint. Trial Stakes. , Saxony and Dialogist soon got to the front of the field for' the Trial Stakes, with Jubilee Song. Arouse, and , Discoursive handy. Saxony dropped out jiißt before reaching -the straight, and Jubilee Song joined Dialogist in the lead. Jubilee Song finished best and won by a length from Leith, who finished well and was clear of Dialogist, who just beat Arouse for third. Saxony, Evasion, State Bank, and Sporting Song were next. . ■' I Condition stood to the winner. Dialogist is improving, and Arouse should do better soon. Poor Quality Hurdlers. Beau Star went but very fast in the Sandon Hurdles, but hit the hurdle opposite the judge’s box hard and that steadied him-a little. However, he remained the leader till three furlongs from home, where Benedictine and Manawatu were closing on him, and No Humbug was moving forward. Benedictine was first over the last hurdle, but Muuawatu finished best and won by two lengths. No Humbug was a poor third a liea'd in front of Beau Star. They were a poor lot of hurdlers. Favourite’s Failure. Palm was backed to odds on in the Olmkea Hack Handicap, but after running outside two horses all the way to the straight could not withstand a challenge by Arena, who had a nice run behind , the trio of leaders all the way. Land Tax, Mid Acre and Pam were the leaders from Arena, but in the straight Arena ran past them to win by tjiree lengths, while Palm was ridden out to beat Black Man, who finished fast, by half a length. Dick Whittington was fourth. Arena wonj decisively, but Palin was Unlucky aud so was Black Mnn. Mid Acre and Land Tax faded after being ridden; hard'to the home turn. The Chief Event. -

Korokio, the farm favourite for the Rangitikci Handicap, always, 'vaa well placed anil won nicely. •’ . Prince led through the straight the I ,first time frpin Plateau and Headmis-i 'ti'ess, with Koifokio next.. Five furlongs from home Prince Colossus was just clear of Headmistress,-.with Plateau following, then Korokio, with Spearform and Beryl Latour together; next. Mercian Prince close tip and True Shaft last: Three furlongs from home Korokio moved up b'e-t hind the leaders and she ran round them; on the home turn to come on and win by a length from Plateau, who beat Headmistress half a neck, with Prince Colossus a head away fourth, True Shaft fifth, then Spearform', Mercian Prince and Bcryb'Latour. Korokio went yveli throughout the race and 'her rider secured her an excellent > •'Sfsage. PlatciHi is improvihg;; Headmisi.rs'sand Prince: Col owns ran good races, aiid True Shaft: finished on Well, Meis clan Prince was: backed tosecond favoiiritism, but never;was a possibility. . Argument-Scores. - - Ebeum made most of -the running in the Bangitoto Hack Handicap. Along the back he was followed by Royal Record, Argument, Algides, Hunting Queen; Round Score and Tahurangi. There was no great change in the run to the home turn, but in the straight Argument finished strongly and woii by a length and a half from Alcjdes, with Round Score half a length away, and a head in front of Eibeum. Next came Royal Record, Hunting- Queen, Hark Forrard, Raparahara, and Tahurangi. Argument shaped promisingly at Masterton recently, and wins well backed. He finished very solidly, and won in good style. Tahurangi never was dangerous, and Ebeum and Royal Record stopped quickly after making the pace to the straight entrance. A Good Race. A hot favourite failed when Royal Routine was beaten in the Clifton Handicap. Sanguine King led Royal Routine to the straight, and withstanding his challenge beat him home by a neck, with Good Hunting three lengths away third, and -Spearform fourth, just ahead "of Davistock. This was a good race! The.field ran in a bunch nearly all the way. and little separated the first and the last at the winning post. The Farewell. Heavy scratchings reduced the field for the Farewell Handicap from 12 to. five. The five were remarkably evenly backed, and they provided a good contest. Wasteland and Hunting Lodge led' to the straight, but both had to be hard ridden to hold off Courtega. Hunting Lodge won by a neck from Wasteland, who beat Courtega by « long head. Bodyline was fourth, and the only other runner was Arena. Results in Detail TRIAL STAKES. of £6O. second £lO, third £5; weight 8.5. Six furlongs. 1 A. P. Easton s t>r, g. - BANKS PENINSULA i Chief Race to Some Shamble STAYED ON WELL Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, October 27. The Bants Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting was held to-day in beautiful weather; the track was in good order, but was slightly dead. There was a fair attendance and the totalizator investments were £7843, as against £6380/10/- last year. A Narrow Margin. The Okains Trial Stakes was responsible for a close finish between the Chokebore filly Owlsgleam, by. Day Comet, and Wino, by Cockpit; and although the latter secured the verdict there were many who thought that Owlsgleam had won. Owlsgleam took charge from Delice, Azevedo and Capital inside the distance, but ran about a good deal, and his rider had difficulty in keeping him straight. As a result Wino got up on the rails with a lucky run and a half-head margin for her was declared. Capital was half a. length back in front of Hostis (who was last away), Deliee, Night Gem and Gas Mask. The favourite, Orris, waz never prominent. Monastic Upsets. Cottingham and Chidden carried the bulk of the money in the Kaituna High-' weight Handicap, but both were well beaten by Monastic, who, once he took charge in the straight from Silver Step and Chidden, romped away to win with ease from Chidden, who stayed on better Cottingham. Silver Step was six lengths away next. Some Shambles Stays On. There was a close finish in the 'J. F. Buchanan Memorial Handicap. Tout le Monde acted as pacemaker until Some Shamble deposed him at the home turn, and the latter led into the straight from Argentic, 'Sweet Agnes imd Polydora. Argentic and Polydora both made game efforts over the final stages, but Some Shamble hung oh to beat Argentic by a ■head, with Polydora half a length away. Srlvei- Sight, Cough, Sweet Agnes and Variant followed. Polydora was in one of her worst moods in the birdcage, and took a lot out of herself before being led to the post. Probably on this account Sweet Agnes was much better supported. Polydora was a good way back over the early stages, and did not improve her position to much extent until half a mile from hoine. She executed some felling work in the straight, but the ordeal under her br.g weight was beyond her. Double-figure Dividend. Tuirau won at her last start a few weeks back, but nevertheless, was allowed to pay big double figures in the Halswell Hack Handicap. 'She was in fifth place turning for home, Iceni being in charge from JElbanor at this stage, but when. Iceni ran out wide nt the straight entrance, Klbanor had a dear lead, from Tuirau, and appeared an easy winner. Tie weakened, however, half a furlong from home, and Tuirau soon headed him and went on to record a decisive win. Knock Out also finished fast to cut Elbanor'out of second money. Invoice, Cheap Money and Theatin were next.

Consistent Performer. Sam Smith added another to his nc* count by winning the Le Bons Handicap after a close tussle with Quietly. Cranford nnd Gaysotne were the curly leaders, but at the end of a furlong Grecian Prince had charge, and led into the straight from Cranford, Gaysomc,' Quietly, Fairway, and Sam Smith, Tlie leader did not last long, and Cranford gave way to Quietly and Sant Smith half a furlong from home. The two lash named then engaged in a'hard struggle, Sam Smith getting in the deciding stride. Cranford was a fair third in front of Gaysome and Jnloux. Never in Doubt. Rebel Chief, who failed to stay on in his seven-furlong engagement at Rnngiofa on Labour Day. made a one-horse race of tlie Brnckenficld Hack Handicap over the same distance. He rushed to the front at the end of a furlong, and entered the straight clear of Golden Dart. Top Rank. Maroha, and Bella Rosa. He drew right away inside the distance, and won easing up from Bella Rosa, who finished strongly to bent Top Rank. Maroha was close up next in front of Earthquake, Golden Dart, Heather Glow, and Haere Tonu. !

NIGHTLY SUCCESSFUL Moonee Valley Gold Cup COX STAKES TO CHATHAM By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright (Received October 28, 5.5 pan.) Melbourne, October 28. At the Moonee Valley races the following was the result of the MOONEE VALLEY COLD CUP, .of £3OOO (including £2OO Gold Cup). One mile four furlongs and a half. NIGHTLY, 9.2 1 MIRAMOND, 8.2 2 UPOKO, ARIKI, 7.8 . 3 McCarten rode the winner. Nightly was not extended, and his effort is regarded as a great Melbourne Cup trial. He is now liable to a rehandicap. The New Zealander Peter Jackson won the Moonee Valley Cup last year. To-day’s minor place-getters all have New Bealand associations. Streperus dropped dead shortly after the finish of the race. The W. S. Cox Plate resulted: — CHATHAM '1 HALL MARK 2 ROGILLA 3 Playground, when running second, fell at the last jump in the hurdle race. His rider, I. Tucker, escaped injury. As was the case nt Handwick, Roy Reed successfully claimed a losing fee on Nightly. The trainers of the New Zealanders Walton Park and Ventrac were fined £1 for not scratching their horses in the cup. Silver Ring was outclassed in the W. S. Cox Plate. He is better suited in a handicap. ... Golden Hair and Royal Hunting failed to show up jn the Dundonald Handicap. The winner of that race, Double Bard, has had four wine in his last five starts.

Recent reports from Melbourne stated that Nightly was making good progress and had thrown off his soreness. His win on 'Saturday*is a fair indication that he is in his best form and he should be a Mel* bourne Cup possibility, even with a rehandicap. It is stated that Silver Ring was outclassed at weiglit-for-age in the W. S. Cox’Platc, run over nine furlongs and a half, but if there is one New Zealanders in Australia at present equal to weight-for-age, outside of Nightly, it is Silver Ring. C. Boyle is having an unlucky spin with him team. Miramond. second in the cup, is a four-year-old gelding by Limond from Mirabclle 11. thus brother to Theo. He is owned by Mrs. M. Gearin and is trained by J. T. Jamieson, who also supplied the third horse, Upoko Ariki, a four-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from Podokes bred and trained by Jamieson, but owned by Mr. D. M.
