Great Aspirations

Speaking at. the social gathering of the .Wellington branch of the Overseas League at the Hotel St. George: last evening, Sir Michael Myers, the president, said that the league, which was formed in 1910 by Sir Evelyn Wrench, had as its patron his Majesty the King. Several other important offices were held by members of the Royal Family. The New Zealand branch, which was formed in 1910, had gone ahead by leaps and bounds, and the membership was growing steadily month by month? The Wellington branch had its birth three years ago, but it languished Until last year, when an enthusiastic band got together. The membership ' was now no less than 150. There was a preponderance of the gentler sex, ( and more male members were required. He suggested, that it was the duty of the ladies by their own methods of argument, cajolery and persuasion to/get the men to join. , Sir Michael quoted the aims and objects of the league, Which, he said, had great aspirations. He often wondered* however, if there were too many societies with similar objects. While he would not discount the laudable work, of those societies, their multiplicity* often created many difficulties.
