OBITUARY

Mrs. H. Freeman

Mrs. Hannah Freeman, whose death occurred recently in Wellington, aged 84 years, was a daughter of Mr. Eli Alien, who arrived by the ship Birman in 1842. Mr. Allen married a daughter of Mr. Mitchell, who was a passenger by the ship Gertrude in 1841. The Mitchells settled in what was known as Poihill Gully, which was then covered with native bush. Later, the land was subdivided, and the place was named Mitchelltown.

After his marriage, Mr. Eli Allen made his home in Ghuznee Street. In 1848 the house was destroyed by an earthquake. Mr. Allen bought a section in Cuba Street and built a house there. In 1853 he sold the property for £BO, and in the early 'sixties he acquired land at Tawa Flat, and took up farming. In 1877 Miss Allen married •Mr.' Henry James Freeman, watchmaker, of Manners Street, a wellknown citizen of Wellington, who predeceased her 20 years ago. Mrs. Freeman had a long association with the Methodist Church in Manners Street and Taranaki Street, and was both a scholar in the. Sunday School and afterward a teacher. Mrs. Freeman took a great interest in the Wellington Early Settlers’ Association. . She leaves two daughters, Misses G. and E. Freeman, and two sons, Messrs. H. J. Freeman and C, J. Freeman. The service at the graveside at Bolton Street Cemetery was conducted by the Rev. T. R. Richards, who also referred to the sterling qualities of Mrs. Freeman at the memorial service in Wesley Church. ’ - ' ' Mrs, Marion R. Gillies The death occurred yesterday- morning of Mrs. Marion Rosalie Gillies, of “Edenkillie” Park, Rangitikei Line, relict of the late Mr. Hugh Gillies, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Palmerston North. The late Mrs. Gillies had been a school teacher in Victoria. She was an adopted daughter of the late Mr. Donald Mansdn, who owned “Edenkillie” Park before it was purchased by the late Mr. Hugh Gillies. Mrs. Gillies was the second wife of the late Mr. Gillies, to whom she was married over 20 years ago. There was no family of the marriage. Thomas Wilson, the well-known Waikato sportsman, who had resided at Raglan for eighty years, died today, at the age of 86. The deceased raced, among others, the horses Waimai and Wiltshire, when they won the Grand National Steeplechase.: Late Captain F. Stewart The funeral of Captain F. Stewart took place yesterday afternoon at the Soldiers’ Cemetery, Ka'rorl. Masons and Oddfellows were present at the last rites, and a guard of honour was formed by the Legion of Frontiersmen. The Wellington Master Builders’ Association, of which the late Captain Stewart was a prominent member,- was' represented. The late Captain Stewart had an excellent war record. He left as a corporal with the 4th Reinforcements, was promoted to the rank of sergeant on Gallipoli, received his commission before going to France, and was decorated with the Military Cross for conspicuous service on the Western front.
