political activity is being renewed after the autumn holidays, and at a meeting yesterday of the executive committee of the National Liberal Federation it was decided that at the next general- election the Liberals will contest 400 seats and that there are to be no compacts with other parties. ■. ’ < . • ' , The Conservative Party conference opens at Bristol on October 4, and the official agenda, which has now been issued, is of special interest; because the party is numerically the most powerful party in the existing system o£ co-operation between the ■ political parties supporting the Government; The first place in the agenda Is given to a resolution expressing unequivocal confidence in the National' Government.

A resolution which is likely to arouse discussion invites the party to condemn certain propositions Of the draft policy on Indian reform, upon which i the report of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament is still pending. It is., however, recalled by “The Times” < that the Conservative Party has recently and decisively refused to do ithis.
