BROTHERS UNDER THE UNIFORM
/ —♦ ■ A praiseworthy human gesture has been made by the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association in its decision to admit to-honorary membership a German ex-soldier who had fought against the Allies in the Great War. If a similar, spirit animated the nations now so seripusly at odds over questions raised by the War and the Peace Treaties the world would be in better case. However much the individuals of the various countries concerned may desire to let bygones be bygones, interests beyond their control contrive to keep the international situation in a state of ferment and suspicion. If the action of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association could in principle become a ruling public sentiment everywhere, these interests could be dethroned. The peace structure to be strong and permanent must be built from the ground up—from the growing strength of public opinion, quickened by such incidents as that which has just happened in Christchurch.
