Red Cross Society

At a recent meeting of the XVellington Centre, Ne v Zealand Red Cross Society, the chairman, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, referred to the success of the bridge party held recently, and the thanks of the committee were conveyed to-all those concerned in its promotion. Thanks were expressed to Mrs. XVray and helpers at Miramar, for the successful dance which they had promoted, resulting in tlie sum of £0 being handed in. The Australia and New Zealand Pictures, Ltd., was also thanked for remitting part proceeds from the recent screening of the “Song of the Plough.” A further donation of £25 was received for the relief of distress, the donor expressing appreciation of the receipt of particulars supplied by the society after making a previous donation. The chairman referred to the very fine work in the form of children’s garments and peggy square quilts which had been made up and sent in by students at the Khandallah and Ngaio schools. These gifts had proved most acceptable and reflected great credit upon the. children who had made them, and the spirit of charity which had actuated them in their work.

Mrs. Ellen, hon. secretary, ladies’ auxiliary, reported that applications for relief at the depot were still being received. The distribution of clothing, boots, layettes, new’ material for making up, and groceries had been carried out. The Red Cross Cafeteria at the Hospital for serving refreshments to outpatients is being maintained. Miss Eagar, the hon. secretary, reported that during the month 2218 cases had been dealt with. The service was greatly appreciated by those concerned.
