GARIBALDI VETERAN
Funeral at Waikumete
Dominion Special Service.
Auckland, September 11.
With i(. Union Jack covering his coffin and upon it the sword he had worn in Italy 75 years ago as an officer of Garibaldi’s famous “Thousand,” the centenarian Captain William John Newby was borne to his last resting place in Waikumete Cemetery to-day. Six grandsons acted as bearers, and one, Mr. Cecil Newby, sounded the “Lrfst Post” at the close of the burial service. The Returned Soldiers’ Association sent a wreath of popples and laurel haves.
