BRITISH FISHERIES
Reorganisation of Herring Industry Suggested COMMISSION’S REPORT ' (British .Official Wireless.) (Received August 22. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, August 21. Reorganisation and control of the British herring industry are unanimously recommended in tlie first report of tlie Sea Fish Commission, of which Sir Andrew Duncan is chairman. It is proposed that a herring board be set up to create the framework of an organisation within the herring industry. resting upon a system of licensing. Herring fishermen, salesmen. curers, and kipperers would all require to lie licensed. The commission advises the Government. to make a grant of £50,000 to the board as a contribution toward the problem of redundancy in herring fleet by the purchase of older boats for scrapping. It recommends a further grant of £125.000 for initial establishment expenses^and to cover administration charges for at least two years for marketing services and other purposes. A publicity campaign to encourage the consumption of herrings both fresh and cured is also suggested.
