THE SOCIAL ROUND

Seatoun R.S.A. Dance Memories of wartime days were recalled to those present at a dance held at Seatoun on Tuesday night by the Seatoun Auxiliary 1 ' Returned Soldiers’ Association. For the occasion the Ventnor Street schoolroom, bad been transformed into “his Majesty’s New Zealand Transport, No. 21,” complete with portholes, mast, rigging and promenade deck. On the bridge, past which could be seen .the funnel, the captain (Mr. R. B. Powell) paced to and fro, issuing occasional orders. Faintly the throb of the engines could be heard in the background, and, at intervals, the crackle of Morse as messages were exchanged with other ships. . t In short, the effect produced was most realistic and the time between the “Embarkation Quickstep” and the making of . port seemed to pass so quickly that the happy voyage was over far too soon. The posting of a submarine guard and the resultant false alarm provided an amusing interlude. . ' The decorations were the work of Mr. F. Alexander and Mr. U. A. Perry was .responsible for the sound and lighting effects. During the evening Mrs. J. E. Ramsey, wife of the patron, on behalf of the wives and mothers of soldiers in the district, presented the auxiliary with a handsome silk New Zealand Ensign, on the staff of which was an appropriate inscription. Mrs. Ramsey said that, prompted by admiration for the years .of self-sacrifice and courage and in loving membry of those of their comrades who'had fallen in battle, the wives and mothers of those who served 1914-1918 presented the emblem of New Zealand, crowned with the honourable badge of the Returned Soldiers’ Association* to the auxiliary. Mr. G. B. Mann, the chairman of the auxiliary, accepted the Hag and returned grateful thanks,’saying that the gift was -the result of a spontaneous and unsolicited effort. Mr. F. Illsted then sang the New Zealand anthem. “God Defend New Zealand.”, Later in. the evening LieutenantColonel MacQuarrie spoke briefly.
