VICTORIA LEAGUE
English Schoolgirls’ Visit Lady Buckleton presided at the July meeting of the Victoria League committee. London headquarters wrote acknowledging introductions for seven members who were visiting Britain. Miss Mary McLean, 0.8. E., was to represent the Wellington branch at the London annual meeting, after which a tea party was to be held at which all the delegates would be presented to the president, Princess Alice, Duchess of Athlone.
It. was reported that a very flue assortment of books and magazines had been received at, and after, the winter book evening. About 90 parcels of books and magazines were afterward packed by members and sent to the backblocks, relief workers, the sick, and institutions. Some very appreciative letters had been i-eceived. One teacher in a Maori school wrote that the books, and especially those suitable for children, were very much appreciated. Tentative plans were discussed for the visit of the British school girls who would arrive in Wellington about September 19 by the Rotorua and who would be in -the care of Miss Edith Hampson, 0.8. E.. who visited New Zealand last year. Miss Stevenson would be also of the party, which would consist of 24 girls of from 17 to 19 years of age from well-known English and Scottish public schools. Lady Buckleton stated that she had received a number of offers of hospitality for, the girls from members of the league and others, but could still do with more. It was reported that a letter had been received from London asking the committee’s sympathetic interest in a family whose near relative was very anxious about them. Letters had been exchanged and a visit paid, and the family had been assisted.
