LIVESTOCK EMBARGO
Favoured by Fanners’ Conference ROYAL ROAD TO SUCCESS Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, May 24, Very definite opinion in favour of the retention of the embargo on live stock Imported from countries subject to foot-and-mouth disease was expressed by the Interprovincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union to-day when a remit to that effect was carried by 74 votes to live. A further remit was carried, however, urging that New Zealand quarantine restrictions be carefully gone into and where necessary revised. The sponsors of this remit —the Pahlatua branch—pointed out that stock was already coming into this country after having been held in Australia. It would be a better plan to bring such quarantine more under the control of New Zealand. Another suggestion was made that importations of stock be carried out on definite boats at definite times, and that the regulations regarding those boats be tightened up. During the debate the opinion was expressed that New Zealand did not need the Importation of new blood. The royal road to success was by constructive line breeding.
