Sir—ln a discussion on a momentous topic regarding the correct spelling of a cape in Cook Strait, Mr. H. Fildes makes a statement which requires some clearing up, if it be possible to do so. He says: “In the chart of Cook’s Strait, First Voyage, the cape ie properly placed, Elsdon Best having been misled by an ambiguity that may exist in Cook’s Chart of New Zealand.” In the first place Mr. Fildes says positively that Best was misled. Then he refers to an ambiguity that “may” exist as being the cause of Beet’s “muddle meat." Now if the ambiguity is purely hypothetical, how can Mr. Fildes be positive about Mr. Best being misled? Conversely, if Mr. Best was really misled, then the ambiguity must have existed for certain—there being no maybe’s about it. Trusting Mr. Fildes will clear up thio point.-I am, etc;, puzzLED .
