TELEGRAPH CHARGES
Business Men Urge Cheap
Uniform Rate
Dominion Special Service.
Palmerston North, May 9.
The zone charge system for telegrams which was recently introduced was the subject of criticism at yesterday’s meeting of the council of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce.
A recommendation that the introduction of a uniform cheap rate for telegrams would result in a substantial increase in revenue for the department was placed before the council by a recently appointed committee. The recommendation instanced the greeting telegram introduced last Christmas. The chief postmaster, Mr. D. Black, said that a comparison, with the Christmas telegram was not justifiable as there were many people '"ho only sent telegrams at Christmas. The graduated scale bad been introduced to secure additional revenue and to avoid the loss hitherto experienced on long-distance telegrams. Mr. A. P. Stuart said the committee considered the new charges an imposition. In the cases of Auckland and Christchurch, letters were now being sent instead of telegrams. Mr. J. A, Nash, M.P., said that the Postmaster-General would probably be visiting the city in the near future and suggested that the matter should be left in abeyance until his visit. The council agreed to Mr. Nash’s suggestion./ ,
