BABY IN DANGER
Tram Drags Perambulator UNUSUAL NEAR-ACCIDENT A baby who was being wheeled in a perambulator across the top of an Auckland street early on Saturday afternoon last had a remarkable escape from Injury when the perambulator became caught to the back of a tramcar and was dragged for some distance before the tram stopped. The baby was thrown out of the perambulator, but was not injured. While endeavouring to avoid an approaching motor-car the mother of the child, Mrs. F. Lee, of 96 Clarence Street, Ponsonby, pushed the perambulator a little too close to a passing tramcar, with the result that as the tram swung round from Pitt Street into Karangahape Road the wooden gate of the lifeguard, swinging at the rear, caught a wheel of the perambulator,” says the “New Zealand Herald." The mother tried to retain her hold of the perambulator, but it was pulled from her grasp, and she fell forward on to her hands and knees. Meanwhile the perambulator was being dragged . along by the tram, and after travelling some distance ft toppled over, in such a way that the baby was thrown lightly on to the road. Attracted by. the shouts of spectators, the driver of the tramcar stopped after travelling a ' short distance further, and the.perambulator was freed. The baby was picked up uninjured.
