INAUGURAL MEETING

Royal Society of New Zealand '■ The first annual meeting of the newly-constituted Royal Society of New Zealand will take place .on Wednesday morning next at Victoria! University College, lu view of the importance of the occasion, the Wellington Philosophical Society has arranged a reception to members of the Royal Society and has drawn up a programme of functions to last over the two days. » ; The Wednesday morning and afternoon will be taken up with the Royal Society’s first annual meeting. In tne evening a reception will be held in the Dominion Farmers’ Institute, at which Professor R. Speight, the first president of the Royal Society, and the Prime Minister,-Rt. Hon.-G. AV. Forbes, will speak. There will also he the presentation to Mr. G. V. Hudson of the Sidey Award for Daylight Saving. On the following morning Professor Speight will preside over a session in the Dominion Farmers’,lnstitute, during which a series of addresses on scientific subjects will be given. Among the speakers will be Dr. L. Cockayne, F.R.S., Professor T. H. Easterfield, Pr<fessor P. W. Burbidge, and Dr. F. J. Turner. These addresses, and the previous evening f s reception, will be open to members of the Wellington Philosophical Society and their friends. On the Thursday afternoon, weather permitting, a visit will be paid to the O tart Open Air Museum; the Meteorot logical Office, and the Dominion Observatory are also to be visited. A farewell afternoon tea will conclude the programme.
