City Street Names
Sir,—l read Dr. G. H. Scholefield’s address, as printed in your journal, on street names in Wellington. It makes good reading for Wellingtonians of days gone by. Among the streets named after vice-royalty. I find, by comparing it with n comprehensive list published in “The Dominion” on October 1 and 7, 1927, under the nom de plume of “F. 1.5. that the worthy Doctor has omitted Grey Street (after Sir George Grey), Bowen Street (after Sir George Bowen), and Hobson Street (after Captain Hobson). Captain Hobson, if I recollect aright, gave Wellington a fine stir up when he landed there to assert sovereign rights that he thought the early colonists had ui-ui rped.
Nevertheless I thank him for keeping the rising generation reminded of the origin of Wellington street names. I would like the Wellington City Council to go on commemorating the names of, past, present and future governors. It preserves, historically, the names of our governors, and on the whole we have been very fortunate in the selection made for us by the Home authorities. May we always be in touch with Old England, and let them select the vice-regal representatives for us. It is better so. —I am. etc. MARK MAXTON. Greytown. May 7.
