OBITUARY

Sir Louis Baron London, May 6. The death is announced of Sir Louis Baron, chairman of Carreras Ltd., tobacco manufacturers. Sir Louis Bernhard Baron was born on October 19, 1876. He was associated with his late father's business enterprise since early manhood with the Baron Cigarette Machinery Company, Ltd., who were the pioneers of cigarette making by machinery in England. For the past 26 years he has been associated with Carreras, Ltd., of which company he filled the positions of chairman and managingdirector. He gave generously to charity. His father is estimated, to have given over £750.000 to hospitals alone and to have given over £2,000,000 for charitable objects. The late Sir Louis was knighted four years ago. Mr. W. H. Pratt Mr. William Henry Pratt, whose death occurred at his residence on St. John's Hill on Saturday, was well known in Christchurch and Nelson (states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Wanganui). His father, the late Mr. William Pratt, of Christchurch. settled iu Nelson in 1843, a year after ' that district had been founded. Lyttelton was Mr. Pratt’s birthplace, and he spent his boyhood days in the South Island. In 1874 he made a trip to the Old Country, travelling in the sailing ship Waitangi, the journey taking three months. After his marriage in England. Mr. Pratt returned to Christchurch, stayed there for some years and then removed to Riwaka. in tlie Nelson district. Four years later ho bought the farm property "Totaranui.” Thirteen years ago he came to Wanganui and settled on St. John's Hill. Mr.' Pratt was a- great lover of art. and exhibited work in the chief centres of the Dominion. He also served the Wanganui Aris anil Crafts Society in an administrative capacity, being both a vice-president and member of the committee. Beautification of the landscape was another of his interests, and he found scope for it as a member of the Wanganui Beautifying Society. In his younger days he took a full interest in outdoor recreation, was a member of a number of sports bodies in Christchurch and of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He was .also a foundation member of the first choral society formed in Christchurch, which was created by Mr. Robert Parker, now organist at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral. Wellington. Mr. Pratt took a special'and unostentatious interest in children’s homes and institutions promoted for the welfare of young people. Be leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters. The funeral took place at the Aramoho cemetery yesterday, Archdeacon J. R. Yeung officiating. Mr. R. H. Turton Mr. Richmond Hanson Turton, who died at Greytown on May 5 at the age of 58. was a barrister and solicitor, and had a brilliant legal career. The second son of the late Wesley Turton (barrister and solicitor and Crown Prosecutor of Queenstown, Lake Wakntlpu, Mr. Turton was born at Queenstown in 1876 and was educated at the Southland Boys’ High School and Otago Boys’ High School, and went on to Otago University, graduating as LL.B, in 1900. After some time spent in tlie offices or Mr. Alan Holmes and Mr. J. F. M. Fraser (Crown Solicitor), of Dunedin. Mr. Turton joined bis father in Queenstown during tlie dredging boom. He was at this time chairman of the Wakiitipu District Hospital Trustees and steward of the Arrowtown Racing Club. in 1907 Mr. Turton was appointed a ma gist rale (the youngest ever appointed in New Zealand), acting in that capacity in Oamttru, Greymouth and .Masterton. When the Great War broke out Mr. .Turton enlisted as a private, serving with the 12th Otago Moulded Rifles and 4th Otago infantry for three years in Egypt. Gallipoli (up to the evacuation). and France. A keen sportsman. Mr. Turton represented the Otago Boys’ High School and the Otago University at football and tennis, and, up to the time of his death, took a keen interest in golfing and angling. Of a kindly and most lovable nature his- death will come as a great shock to a large circle of friends (in both Islands), whose sympathy will go out to his widow..
