BRADMAN MAKES 65

Three Wickets Down for 163 at Lunch MATCH AT LEICESTER Opponents’ Total Already Passed By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received May 8, 1.5 a.m.) London, May 7. In their first innings against Leicestershire, the Australians at the luncheon adjournment had lost three wickets for 163. The wicket was dead easy when Brown and Bradman resumed in brighter and less blustering conditions. Tlie overnight rain had slowed the outfield. Bradman early cover drove and hooked Smith to the fence. Other hits worth four slopped into the sodden turf. Brown batted with quiet grace, not forcing the pace. He bad added only three in half an hour when lie played late to Smith and snicked the ball into the wicket. Kippax played pretty shots, timing well. He. pulled Geary to the boundary. Smoke drifting over the ground from neighbouring factories did not improve the batting. Bradman, after a quiet spell in the fifties, began punishing Geary, but badly missed a late inswinger which struck the off stump. He batted 95 minutes and was less adventurous than usual. Play will begin on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and stumps will be drawn at 5 p.m. Chipperfield has practically recovered. Bromley, who is suffering from slight Influenza, has a higher temperature to-day and neither will be available for the Cambridge match. Scores are: — LEICESTERSHIRE. First innings I'’AUSTRALTA. London, May 6 Mr. Moult, in the "Daily Telegraph,” as the result of an inquiry, received from an ex-Australian at Leicester, surmises that Bradman is out to beat the record jointly held by Grace (1895) and Hammond (1927) of scoring a thousand runs in twenty-two days. ■
