HOCKEY CONTROL

Wellington Committee Meets REPRESENTATIVE GAMES A variety of business relating to the game of hockey was. dealt with by the management tommiftee of the Wellington Hockey Association, which met last night. The chairman, Mr. J. L. McAlister, presided. . The association decided to advise the City Council that the Keith Izard Park would not bo required this season. A donation of £l/1/- was made to the funds of the Free Ambulance. On June 4 a match will be played at Wellington between a Wellington representative eleven and a side chosen from the Universities of New Zealand. The Petone chib requested that'their three teams, senior B, junior, and third, be permitted to play their Karori Parkgames at 3 o’clock in order to have more time to reach the park. The request was forwarded to the grounds committee. . It was resolved that a selection committee of three be appointed for selection of senior representative teams, and the former custom of appointing a sole selector was departed from. The committee elected comprised Messrs. 0. J. Mullins,’ Len Butcher and P. J. Spiers. A challenge -was issued to the Auckland Hockey Association, holders of the New Zealand Challenge Shield. It was decided to send a senior representative team to Palmerston North to play Manawntu on 'Wednesday, June 13. The Nelson Hockey Association was advised that a Wellington junior representative team would be sent to Nelson on August 4, and a senior Wellington eleven representative team would meet a senior Nelscm side at Wellington on the same date. • The Motucka Hockey Association was invited to send a team to Wellington, also on August 4. The Wairarapa Hockey Association was invited to send a team to 'Wellington on some date after August 4. Entries for the annual five-a-side tournament on the King's Birthday close at noou on May 31, the entry fee being 1/for senior and senior B players and Gd. for junior players. • A bulletin from the New Zealand Hockey Association,- Christchurch, reporting on tliß recent annual meeting, stated that Wellington’s representative, Mr. S. B. Browne, duly moved in terms of the W.II.A.’s notice of motion, that the number of times a holder of the Challenge Shield could be called upon to defend* the trophy in any one season be limited. After a full discussion the motion was defeated by 12 votes to 11. A two-thirds ipajority, it was pointed out, was necessary to alter rules. The principal arguments advanced by Mr. Browne were that Wellington would probably challenge for the shield this season (this has been done), and. if successful, would probably receive quite a number of challenges. Wellington was in a difficult position regarding grounds—they were both expensive and few. in number—nnd the number of days allotted for hockey were few compared with requirements during the season. Wellington was anxious not to have club hockey unduly interfered with by shield games. The chief argument submitted in opposition, continued the bulletin, was that the present rule gave the management committee ample discretion to limit the number of games a holder would have to play in defence and that the representations made by any Jiolder would at till times receive sympathetic consideration by the management committee.
