ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

Recently much interest has been taken in the activities of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra, which is rehearsing under Mr. Leon de Mauny for its firet concert of the season, to lie held_at the Town Hall on Thursday, May 17. The ever-popular music of the Nutcracker Ballet” of Tschaikovsky will be played, the effect being enhanced by the harp, too infrequently heard nowadays. The harpist. Mrs. Constance Hughes Johnston, of Wanganui, will contribute a solo number, “Loreley.” ' with orchestral accompaniment. Thq symphony chosen for this concert is the Cesar Franck, n most beautiful work, full oi charming melody. Other orchestral numbers will be “Prometheus” (Beethoven), a stirring overture, and “A Shropshire Lad,” the most interesting work of the young British composer Butterworth, whose life was cut short by the Great War. The vocalist will be Madame Margaret Mercer (soprano), of Napier, who will sing the lovely aria by Gluck, “Ye Powers That Dwell Below.”
