ATTACKED BY FISH
Sydney Diver’s Injuries WELLINGTON COMMENT A cable message of May 5 from Sydney reporting that a diver, Mr. H. Locke, had been attacked by a mass of leather-jackets in 45 fathoms ot water outside Sydney heads, was referred to one of the Wellington Harbour Board’s divers by “The Dominion” vesterday. Tlie diver said lie could not. understand the reference to the 4a fathoms (275 feet), as tlie limit for gear like that used by Mr. Locke was 1-10 feet. Leather-jackets are reported to be common in Wellington harbour, but the diver said that he did not often come into contact with them. lie sometimes saw them as long as eight inches. .“The danger is not from attack hy fish,” the diver added, “but from the pressure of thousands of them driving the ones around you on when you hind in a shoal.” Occasionally the hard canvas of diving gear was turned hy small fish, but so far as tlie leatherjackets were concerned bo had never had any trouble. The Sydney report said that the diver bad his hands badly mauled and was hauled to the surface screaming with agony, with blood pouring from 42 bites. ' (Picture on Page 7.)
