v Increase in Export Values BIG RISE IN WOOL - Shrinkage In Imports In terms of New Zealand currency, and excluding specie, exports for the year ended March 31,1934, amounted to £46,042,570, and imports to £26,130,000, the latter figure representing a recorded value of £21,477,553, reports the Government Statistician. The excess of exports over imports in New Zealand currency was £19,907,000, as compared with £12,451,000 for the previous year. In terms of sterling the excess of exports over imports was £15,926,000 for 193334, as compared with £10,028,000 for 1932-33. 1 The table below shows values of the principal exports for each of the years ended March 31,1933 and 1934: —

Excluding specie, exports in 1933-34 were £8,532,406 greater, than in 1932-33, an increase of 23 per cent. A certain amount of this increase is due to increased exchange, and on a sterling basis the increase is reduced to £4,157,000 (13 per cent.). Three-flfths of the increase of £8,532,406 during 1933-34 occurred in wool, the shipments of which increased by 22,205 bales in quantity and by £5,18G.796 in declared value. Other notable increases were as follow: Butter (385,309 cwt.), £755,325; casein (4600 cwt.), £53,584; beef (251,843 cwt.), £309.178: poi£ (240,110 cwt.), £652,332; sausage casings (670,697 lb.), £198,802; dried milk, (4,779,050 lb.), £117,965; wheat (1,005,541 bushels), £138,769; calfskins (297.647), £130,343; cattle hides (115,516), £188,652; rabbitskins (4,087,409), £164,639; sheepskins (1,898,101), £648,412; opossum skins (183,197) £G4,805; grass and cloves.seeds (50,586 cwt.), £61,777. Gold decreased by 18,694 oz., although the declared value increased by £177,624.

Shipments of cheese increased by 71,827 cwt., but the declared value fell by £342,404, Decreases in both quantity and value were as follow: Mutfou (286,073 cwt.), £68,745; lamb (196.626 cwt.), £1509; apples (20,104,456 lb.). £250,592. Imports of merchandise in 1933-34 were £1,171,253 less than in 1932-33, a decrease >of 5 per cent. The principal decreases occurred in wheat, £243,129; cigarettes, £65,008; tobacco, £157,782; apparel and ready-made clothing n.e.i., £95,748; cotton piece goods, £70,171; silk piece goods. £59,612; motor spirit, £236.590; crude residual oil. £193.707; newsprint, £131,338. ' The principal increases were: Sugar, £52,784; tea, £216,342; timber, £80,007;, motor vehicles £206,804.
