KAIWARRA CROSSING
Overhead Bridge Project REPORT ON PROGRESS Progress in negotiations for the erection of an overhead bridge from Waterloo Quay to the Hutt Road over the Kaiwarra level crossing was reported by the chairman of the Wellington Automobile Club (Inc.), Mr. E. A. Batt, at last night's meeting of the executive of the club. Mi - / Batt said that a deputation had placed (lie club’s views before the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. Considerable opposition bad been offered by the chairman of the Railways Board, Mr. H. H. Sterling, to the financing of this by the Railways Board. The deputation had, therefore, made the suggestion that the City and Suburban Highways Board should apply for power to finance the construction of an overhead bridge. The Makara County Council, it had been reported, was not prepared to entertain any greater liabilities. But, Mr. Batt added, the whole thing would lie carried out by extended borrowing power. The loan would be raised by funds from the Highways Board. He thought they should put this position to the Makara County Council. The money would not be raised as a liability against the local bodies. The Prime Minister had been firmly of the opinion then that an overhead bridge was essential. It was decided to take flic question up with the Makara County Council, and explain to it the proposed method of financing the bridge.
