British People in Crisis MR. BALDWIN’S ADVICE (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 4. Speaking at the Albert Hall conservative I’arty meeting, Mr. StanleyBaldwin, Lord President of the Council, paid a tribute to the work of Mr. Neville Chamberlain, as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Despite criticism. Mr. Chamberlain had stuck grimly and stoutly to a course which in the difficult circumstances of the past two years could not be popular, namely, the maintenance of the hard, stern old method of finance, Involving for the time being high taxation and a continuance of those sacrilices that the British people had made with such magnificent courage. Their example-had created a deep impression throughout the world. He was confident that if the people would only “stick it out” they would have their reward. The Chancellor had already been able to relieve no inconsiderable portion of the burden this year, and he held out hopes of better things next year.
