Penguin’s Captain Appeals (From “The Dominion,” May 5,1909.) The nearing of the appeal brought by Captain Naylor against that portion of the verdict, at the Penguin marine inquiry which involves the suspension of his certificate for twelve months has opened before Mr. Justice Cooper. Captains Lake and Gray are assessors. Mr. Herdman is appearing ou behalf of Captain'Naylor. and Mr. Myers for the Marine Department. The principal question raised is whether the vessel actually struck Tom’s Rock, as has been thought, the possibility of the steamer having collided with an uncharted rock or submerged wreckage being suggested. ) The Peninsularand Oriental Company is fitting Marconi’s wireless telegraph apparatus to the steamers Malwa, Mantua, ond Morea. These steamers are for the Australian mail service. The Orient Company’s new steamers for the Australian mail service are also being provided with wireless equipment. But the Australian Government recently decided that its scheme of wireless land stations must be deferred for the present. » • » Among the minerals brought back by Professor David from the Antarctic is a small piece of stone across which runs nn orange-coloured metalliic smear. That smear. Professor David explains, is vanadium. and if his analysis works out as he thinks it will, we can, he says, be pretty certain that there are deposits of radioactive substances, and perhaps of radium itself. • » • Plans for the conversion of the Mount Cook building into a museum are being worked on by the colonial architect (Mr. J. Campbell).
