EMPIRE GAMES

Team From New Zealand May Be Increased INCLUSION OF CYCLISTS? There is a possibility tha. the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games, which at present consists of three athletes and three swimmers, may be increased. The five cyclists who were nominated were passed over in the selection of the team, owing to the non-com-pliance by the authorities with certain conditions, but as a result of steps that have been taken since then, it is likely that the question of cycling representation will be reconsidered. The New Zealand Cycling Association’s revised nominations are two Canterbury riders, F. J. Grose and G. R. Giles. There is also the question whether athletes willing to pay their own expenses or whose expenses are found for them, will be permitted to join the team. N. F. Cooper, the Auckland distance runner, is in this category, and it is understood that an inquiry has also been received on behalf of the Canterbury hurdler, A. T. Anderson. Members of the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Council are not strongly in favour of the idea, but should a national association send forward a recommendation, doubtless it would receive favourable consideration. One of the swimmers in the party, L. Smith, lives in the Manawatu district, and advice has been received that the Manawatu Knitting Mills intends to present the swimmers with two silk costumes each, one for training and the other for racing. Advice has been received from Mr. Evan Hunter, secretary of the British Empire Games Council for England, that J. E. Lovelock has accepted the place allotted him in the New Zealand team, and that Dr. A. E. Porritt had agreed to act as manager of the team. Lovelock, wlio is at Oxford University, has been nominated for the halfmile and one mile events. Dr. Porritt is a former New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, who is practising his profession in England.
