HOCKEY IN THE RAIN

Only Senior A Fixtures Played CLOSE SCORES IN GAMES So adverse were the weather conditions for hockey on Saturday that the lower grade matches were postponed, and only the senior A fixtures were played. The greasy surface of the grounds at Karort Park made it difficult for players to control the ball, and the games suffered accordingly. In the circumstances, the matches were all of a fairly high standard. . . _ RESULTS AT A GLANCE Wellington, 2; Wesley, 1. Karori 11, 4; University, 1. Karori I, 2; Hutt. 1. DECISIVE VICTORY Karori II Get the Scores University found a difficult adversary in Karori 11, and nt the final whistle th? students found that Karori had netted 4 goals to their 1. Karori bad the best of the first spell which ended in their favour by 3-1. Although Struthers’s goal soon after the start of play augured well for University they were unable to follow up the advantage, and Karori put on three goals before half-time, Frew and Browne being the scorers. Browne’s effort brought the spectators to tip-toe, the ball rebounding from one goal-post to the other and then going in. Play without results followed for some time, until Phypers completed a Karori attack with a feoal. . Messrs. W. Purves and H. J. Smith were referees. WILD-HITTING GAME No Score at Half-time Wild hitting by both teams was a prominent feature of the match between Wellington and Wesley, which concluded in Wellington’s favour by 2 goals to 1. Both teams shared the advantage in the first spell, and half-time sounded without any score. Penalties for obstruction by Wesley were frequent in the second spell, which contained more action than the first. Wellington drew first blood when Ferguson sent the ball into the net with a well-judged shot, but within ten minutes Rouse had given Wesley a start. Vacillating play, slightly to WeL linghon’s advantage, followed, and Wellum netted again for the red and whites. There was no further score. Mr. W. Keys was referee. DRAW DESERVED Karori I Outpoint Hutt The half-time score of 2 goals to 1 in favour of Karori I in the match against Hutt remained until the' final whistle,, although Hutt, on their play, merited a draw. Adams and' McDonald gained Karori’s goals, and Phillips netted for Hutt. The game was'held up with a good deal of line play,.and both teams were given chances of scoring in the second spell. . Obstruction and other breaches, however,: were frequent. Hutt sustained a steady attack for most of the second spell, but on two occasions Karori came negr to netting, the situation being saved'by good clearances by the Hutt Ij&CkS* ■' * s< 51 : O : ' Mr. W.
