SIGNS AND HOARDINGS

Councillor’s View of Regulations Asked his opinion as to the proposed regulations for the control of hoardings and signs, Mr. W. Anpleton, a member of the Wellington City Council, stated that he was responsible for holding, the matter up when the proposed by-laws came before the council for approval. While it was desirable that there should be some regulation of street signs and hoardings, he considered the proposed by-laws went altogether too far. Certainly there should be no desire on the part of the council to make revenue out of the wish of traders to advertise their wares, and some of the proposed provisions were simply ridiculous. He had taken the responsibility of passing a copy of the by-laws on to the Advertising Association, and he thought that when matters affecting the interests of citizens were being considered the people concerned should be given the opportunity to put their views forward. In the present instance he thought the best plan would be for the Chamber of Commerce, Retailers’ Association, and others affected by the suggested alterations in the bylaws, to have a conference with the by-laws committee, and settle the various points. Probably, for the sake of safety, it was desirable that the erection of signs should be carefully considered because there might be created. in some cases, danger to the public. . Similarly from an aesthetic point or view, it might be contended in the public interest that there should be a limitation of the size of lettering of signs on buildings. Generally speaking. he was not in favour of the council enforcing stringent regulations as to placards and notices on the premises of trading establishments. After all, it was their own property, and so long as the signs were not too blatant, and did not endanger the community, he saw no reason why the position should not be left as it was nt present.
