Shandon Too Strong For Waiwetu WATT CUP MATCH Though three iuter-elub golf matches were set down for decision on Saturday, the rain was so persistent that only one of them was played. Shandon scored a decisive victory over Waiwetu iu a Watt Cup match on the Shandon links by 9] games to 2J. The match between Wellington and Hurt for the Crawford Crescent was postponed, as also was the Mary Alward Cup fixture between the women’s clubs of Waiwetu and Shandon, which was to have been played on the Waiwetu course. The Shandon and Waiwetu club’s decided to go on with their Watt Cup engagement. Steady rain from the south set in about 2 o’clock, and continued throughout the afternoon. Though the temperature was on the low side, and the rain caused stance and grip to be uncertain, conditions were not as bad as might have been expected, as the tvind was not unduly troublesome, and the links were in capital order. W B Reilly, after an absence of 18 months from the game, made an auspicious first appearance as No. 1 tor n aiwetu by defeating R. G. Hayward by 2 and 1. Thompson had a great fight, which endeu with honours easy. Manor Park Club The first 36 holes of the 72 holes competition for the Mcllraith trophy were played on the Manor Park links yesterday. The best performer was D. Hay (11), who finished 4 down. A. G. Rauford (S) and F. W. Page (3) were 6 down. Page won the play-off. The first bogey competition resulted in J. Mills (16) and F. W. Page (3) finishing 3 down. A second bogey competition was won by 1. V. O. Duncan (7_), with 1. down, and a third bogey event saw V. Hay (11) successful, with 1 up, W. Packer (18) coining next with 1 down. The first round of the Tingey Cup is to be playci by next week-end. • Titahi Club A bogey competition played on the Titahi links yesterday resulted in a tie between M. Moore (set - .). S. Crichton (14). H. Murphy (16), C. H. Gyles (18), P. McMahon (20), and A. Fletcher (24), who all finished square. They tossed for the trophy, and Moore won. He deserved the prize, as he covered the course in even 4’s. H. Boon (9). D. A. Crombie (12) and W. Kelly (24) were 1 down. A fourball bogey competition wa s won by R. F. Aitken (9) and J. B. Watt (20), with the good card of 7 up. P. McMahon (20) and A. Fletcher (24) were 6 up: and H. Boon. junr. (16) and W. Kelly (24). 5 up. Next week-end Ihe third medal round for the captain’s trophy will be played. The club has decided to run an open tournament at the King’s Birthday weekend. Shandon Club A medal round played on the Shandon links yesterday resulted in a win for R. Lulham. whose card read 80-11-69. The next best performers wore McKenzie, 82-12-70; Stuckey, 78-8-70; and Toomath, 87-17-70. A fourball hest-ball event was won by Clark (9) and Runciman (8). who finished 5 up. Melvin (8) and Brown (8) were 4 up. In the second round of the Odlin irophy competition. Johansen beat Letford, 6 and 4; Poeknall beat Murie, 2 and 1: Bowring beat Boyd. 7 and 6; Tustin beat Robson. 6 and 4: McKenzie beat Taylor. 2 and 1; and Toomath beat Dennis,'4 and 3. • , Shandon Ladies’ Club Au L.G.U. medal round was played by the Shandon ladies’ club yesterday. Paekakariki Ladies’ Club A Canadian foursome played by the Paekakariki Ladies’ Club yesterday was won by Miss Robinson and Miss Hutcheson. who finished 3 down. Mrs. McNeil and Mrs. Len Smith were 4 down. Hutt Ladies’ Club The best scores returned for the L.G.U. played by the Hutt Ladies’ Club last week were:— Seniors, Mrs. Partridge. 90-7-83; juniors. WILSON CUP CONTEST Win for Manawatu Club Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, May 6. Playing on the Hokowhitu links this afternoon, the Manawatu Golf Club defeated the Wanganui club in a match for the Wilson Cup, which the latter club has held for the past four years, by eight matches to four.
