DR. FENWICK’S FUNERAL
Largely-Attended Service MANY FLORAL TRIBUTES Though the funeral of Dr. D. Eardley Fenwick, 0.8. E., which took place on Saturday morning, was of a semiprivate nature, there was an exceptionally large attendance of citizens at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, where the service was held, and the procession to the crematorium at Karori was.an impressive one. The numbers who assembled to pay their respect to the memory of Dr. Fenwick, who died suddenly on Friday morning, were an eloquent, tribute to the esteem with which he was regarded both as a citizen and as a man. , Practically every section of the community was represented. .Those who took part in the service included representatives of the medical profession, the Government, the City Council, the business community, the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the ■Wellington Hospital Board, and the numerous social and charitable organisations with which Dr. Fenwick had been associated in the course of his active life.
The accommodation in the ProCathedral was fully taxed when the service began shortly after 11.30 a.m. Floral tributes were many, and very beautiful, the autumn tints enriching the interior of the church. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. T. H. Sprott). who also read the lessons. He was assisted by Canon Percival James, and the Rev. H. E. K. Fry, of Lower Hutt. The Pro-Cathedral choir was in attendance, and Mr. Robert Parker was at the organ. The chief mourners were Dr. George Fenwick (Auckland) and Mr. Edgar Hazlett (Dunedin). The pall-bearers were Sir. Donald McGavin, Drs. E. L. Marchant, Duncan Stout, IV. Young, and G. AV. Harty, and Mr. Guy Johnston.
Among the large number who attended were the Hon. A. Hamilton and the Hon. C. E. Macmillan (representing the Government), Sir Charles Statham (Speaker of the House of Representatives), Mr. Justice Reed, Mr. Justice Blair, the Hon. Dr. W 4 E. Collins. M.L.C.. the Mayor (Mr. - T. C. A. Hislop), Messrs. F. Castle, R. Brown, and Dr. H. B. Ewen (representing the Wellington Hospital Board), Mr. M. S. Galloway (British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John). Colonel A. Cowles. Bunny. , . - At the conclusion of the simple but impressive service, the funeral procession proceeded, via Hill Street, to the Karori cemetery, where, in the crematorium chapel, the service of committal was conducted by Canon Percival James.
