TENNIS CLUB DANCE

Gathering at Belmont Every success attended the first dance of the Belmont Tennis Club, which was held in the Belmont Men s Club Hall recently. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss N. Payne and Mr. L. Tate, Mrs. Stone and Mr. Clench, and the lucky spot by Mr. and Mrs. G. Bell and Miss I. Moran and Mr. A. Payne. Among those present were Mesdamcs L Moran, pink lace; D. McLennan on Saturday, George Phillips, hairdresser and tobacconist, was charged in the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court before Mr. M. J. Hodgins, J.P., with using his premises as a common gaming house, and his son, Nelson Victor Phillips, was charged with assisting in conducting a common gaming house. They were remanded to appear at Lower Hutt on Wednesday. Bail was granted at £lOO. EASTBOURNE COUNCIL Nominations for Vacancy Nominations to fill the vacancy caused 'on the Eastbourne Borough Council by the resignation of Cr. A. T. R. Duncan closed at noon on Saturday, and three were received by the returning officer, Mr. O. L. Bishop, these being Mr. William Francis Hornig, Mr. Robert Edwin Mauley, and Mr. Hugh O’Reilly. Mr. Hornig was a member of the previous council, and Mr. Manley, who is president of the Eastbourne Ratepayers’ Association, served on -the council some years ago. Mr. O'Reilly contested the seat at the recent by-elec-tion. . The election will take place on April 26, and polling booths will be situated at the Council Chambers, Eastbourne, and the council offices, AVelllngton. The polling hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
