Earthquake Damage to Palmerston Chimneys Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, April fi. It is estimated that the damage ro chimneys in Palmerston North by the heavy earthquake experienced on March 5 will be in excess of £5OOO. The Palmerston North City Council Ims received notification of damage to chimneys from 850 dwellings, involving over 2000 chimneys. The damaged chimney stack at the City Council’s abattoirs at Awapuni has been repaired. Broken joins 20 feet from the top of the stack have been repaired, and vertical and additional horizontal steel bands have been fitted to strengthen the stack. The estimated cost of the work was £l5O.
