OBITUARY

Brigadier J. E. Newbold The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Brigadier John Edwin Newbold, of the Salvation Army. Brigadier Newbold retired some months ago, after being in the Salvation Army for 40 or 50 years. He was widely known, having served in various parts of the Dominion, and in Australia, and for some years prior to bis retirement was a member of the finance section of the headquarters staff. He was in his 68th year, and is survived by his wife and family. The funeral-will leave the Salvation Army Citadel after a service for Karori Cemetery to-morrow afternoon. Mr. Samuel Woodill The death has occurred of Mr. Samuel Woodill, farmer, of Wangaehu. He resided in the Wangaehu settlement for 43 years and was one of tne bestknown dairy farmers along the coast. At the time'of his death he was chairman of directors of tlie IVangaehu Co-operative Dairy Company, a post be had held for a number of years. He was one of the founders of the company and was an original member of the Wangaehu Hall committee. Mr. Woodill was a keen sportsman and took a very full interest in horse racing, being a breeder of note. He bred a number of good horses, including Explosion. Explode, Ratana, Amber Tips. Gold Jacket, All Humbug, and All Spirit. For many years he was a member of the Wanganui Jockey Club, Akaroa was Mr. Woodill’s birthplace. He came to the North Island in 1881 and ten years later settled at ’Wangaehu, commencing farming in JS9S. He is survived by a widow, four brothers and til roe sisters. Mr. Walter Martin The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of Mr. Walter Martin, aged 80. one of the early settlers of Canterbury. slates a Press Association message. He arrived in New Zealand in 1860 and was employed for many years in the Department of Justice until he retired on account of ill-health. For seven years he was clerk of the District Court and registrar of tlie High Court of Western Samoa. Since relinquishing those positions about 19'25 he lived in Sydney and Christchurch.
