Aid From Government FEW APPLICATIONS Dominion Special Service. Dannevirke, March 22. There have not been many applications in Dannevirke for Government assistance to repair damage caused by the recent heavy earthquake. In the case of the Dannevirke County Council, no applications had been received yesterday morning. Yesterday Messrs. C. \V Turner and H. Gayford, of the Public Works Department, and Mr. A. G. Harris, of Napier, carried out an inspection of earthquake-damaged buildings, RAMPS FOR SCHOOLS Wanganui Decision Dominion’ Special Service. Wanganui, March 22. On the recommendation of its architect (Mr. E. R. Hodge) tlie Wanganui Education Board has decided to replace steps at the entrances to brick school buildings with ramps. 'There is a standing order that in the event of an earthquake brick buildings shall be evacuated, and ramps offer less danger than steps in such circumstances and afford quicker exit. On the day following the recent severe earthquake Air. Hodge travelled 200 miles inspecting brick school buildings, and happy to report that but for an external fracture of the upper corner of the pier supporting the dome of the Foxton School and the. severe straining of the West End School, Palmerston North, brick buildings had not been affected. Damage 'to wooden buildings included 78 chimneys and certain water-heating systems. In all 32 buildings had suffered under those headings.
