WOMEN’S ACTIVITIES IN WELFARE WORK

Presbyterian Orphanage it most successful garden party in aid of the Presbylcrian Orphanages was held at “Homewood.” the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland, Karori, on Saturday afternoon. The party was opened by the Rev. R. J. Howie, who was received by the president, Mr. David Calder. Mrs. Sutherland, who wore a black dress relieved with white and a black hat, was presented with a beautiful basket of Howers by Mrs. McFarlane, the oldest member of the auxiliary. The weather was all that could be desired, and the garden was a blaze of colour. The swimming, as usual, was very popular, and the begonias in the conservatory were much admired. There was a well-stocked cake stall on the lawn, in charge of Mrs. Bird and Miss McFarlane, and M,iss Johnston and the Bible Class girls had a sweet stall. Mesdames Redgrave, Grant, Purdy, Wilson, Guthrie and Tait served afternoon tea.

An excellent band played and three small girls danced Scotch dances. Piper Graham piped for a sword dance, by Miss McKay, and the Y.W.C.A. gymnasium girls and Miss O’Brien’s pupils also gave charming displays of dancing. Miss Zena Clarke’s fencing exhibition was enthusiastically received. Hospital Auxiliary There was a full attendance of members at the first meeting this year of the Wellington Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary. Mrs. Pow, president, was in the chair. Letters of thanks and appreciation were received from the medical and lady superintendents for the gifts of chairs and cushions to Victoria, and of bedjackets to the children’s wards. Regret was expressed at the illness of Mrs. Dayonau, the delegate from the Hataitai League of Mothers, and a letter of sympathy was sent. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs. Stace in the death of her husband. Cushions and footstools were promised for Victoria, and plans for the visiting of the hospital for the year were arranged. Borstal Association The annual meeting of the Women’s Borstal Association takes place this evening on the mezzanine floor of the Dominion Farmers’ Institute, -at S o’clock. The many who are interested in the work carried on at the New Zealand Borstal Institutions are invited to attend. The Hon. J. G. Cobbe will preside, and he and the Controller-General of Prisons, Mr. B. L. Dallard, J.P., will speak of the work done at the Point Ilalswell institute. The annual report and balance-sheet will be presented, and at the close of the business part of the meeting there will be an hour for supper and discussion. “Y” Conference At Friday afternoon’s session of the “T” Conference held in conjunction with the Jubilee Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union an illustrated scientific temperance lecturette was given by the Rev. Mr. Wickham, following which Mrs. T. E, Taylor gave a chat on citizenship. Tn the evening in Taranaki Street School a “Y” speech competition was held. There were eleven speakers in all, three of them being young ladies. The subject was “The Importance of the Temperance Enterprise,” resulting in a win for Canterbury, represented by Mr. C. Clements. During the evening an opportunity was taken to present a camera to Miss A. M. McLay on behalf of the New Zealand “Y’s” for the work she has put in during the year. The conference was concluded on Saturday morning, when reports of the different committees were taken. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President. Mr. C. Deans; vice-presidents, Miss Arnitt and Mr. F. Reid; secretary, Miss McKenzie; and treasurer, Mr. S. Guthrie. A discussion re the advisability of holding a summer school followed, and the question was left in the hands of the committee.

In conclusion votes of thanks were passed to Miss McLay, “Y” organiser: Miss Appleby, superintendent; the billeting committee and the Church officers.
