RUGBY FINANCES
Loss on Year’s Working WAIRARAPA UNION Dominion Special Service. Masterton, March 17. “Consequent upon the difficult times through which the Dominion is passing, and also the fact that the standard of play did not reach a very high plane, carrying with it poor attendances of spectators at a number of games, the financial result of the year’s working, a lose of £45/7/3, must be considered satisfactory.” states the annual report, of the management committee of the Wairarapa Rugby Union. As the financial returns were not sufficient to meet expenses, the report continues, it was decided by the committee to raise the admission charges to championship games for the second round. Only for this action, the loss for the season, would have been greater. The receipts for club games showed an increase of £66/3/5 on the 1932 season. The accident insurance fund, which, after paying claims of £57/13/10, ended with a debit of £l3/6/10, a more satisfactory result than the previous year. The report also states that the performance of the senior representative team was only medium, and of a very inconsistent nature. Mention is made of the importance of re-establishing the fifth and sixth grades, the hope being expressed that delegates will have some instructive suggestion to make. , A proposal made at the end of last season that a movement be made with a view to reducing the number of senior teams, will be referred to delegates. The excellent service to the game, rendered by the Referees’ Association is placed on record, but regret is expressed that for the championship final an outside referee, had to be engaged from Wellington, owing to a dispute arising between the committee and the association, the committee being forced to take the action to overcome the deadlock. During the season the Rugby Union rules were amended to provide for representatives of the union being included on the Referees’ Appointment Board,
