Milk for Children

Sir.-An article in “Tim, under bhc heading “Use opens up a subject of vlta .‘“/Vn'evervonly to the dairj- farmers but to eveijone interested in the well-being ot his practice agree that milk >s the best food for growing children. It is also the cheapest. Dietetic troubles in children arise largely from unsuitab e food and irregular meals. .Many children are under-nourished not from lack ot money but from lack of knowledge in expending it. ~ Realising this, the Smith lamilv, in cooperation with the Headmasters Association, undertook last winter to supiily half a pint of pasteurised milk daily to approximately 15 per cent, of the cbiliiren in the city schools, the maximum number receiving the daily milk ration being 2400. One shilling was paid for the milk ration for one child for one month, the cost to the Smith Family being 1120 per mouth. AVith the active co-operation of the corporation milk department, the. purchase nnd distribution of the milk to the schools was carried out without a hitch, and the teachers attended to. the distribution. The children who received the milk ration almost without exception improved in health and vigour. Reports from teachers, parents, and school committees all testify to the excellent results obtained. The Smith Family wishes to continue this work, and earnestly hopes that the citizens of AVellington. especially the parents of young children, will stand behind it. Contributions may be sent to tlie Smith Family otiice. or may be put into collection boxes to be found on the counter of every grocer in the city.—l am. etc.. SECRETARY SMITH. AVellington. Alarch 16.
