Metcalfe Clears 6ft. 5 2-sin. in High Jump AUSTRALIANS AT MARTON Dominion Special Service. Atari on. March IS. Tlie Australian athletes appeared in Marton last evening at the biggest electric light athletic carnival ever held here. The attendance was a record, and the programme was the best ever presented on the west coast. In addition to tlie Australians, a large team of Wellington athletes competed, also the four best cyclists in the North Island—Wade, Sowerby, Guilliard, and Lawrence. J. P. Metcalfe (Australia) established a new record for the high jump, clearing 6ft. 5 2-uin. He was in fine form, and had there been no delay, which was unavoidable, it is more than likely that lie would have equalled his own zYustraliaii jump of 6ft. 6 l-Bin. Sclineidemann, of AVellington, won the broad jump and was second in the hop. step and jump. T. E. Hampson (Australia) won the 220yds. in great style and was second in the 100 yards to Dixon, of Rougotea. AV. Barwick, the Australian miler, showed better form and ran his best mile to date, winning in 4.27 3-5. Cooke and Gibbons, both of AVellington, ran well, but faded at the finish. AVelply and Stephenson, the AVellington sprinters, found their handicaps too great. At the conclusion of tlie sports the visiting competitors and trainers, 200 in number, were entertained at supper, at whicli the president, Mr. G. B. A feature of the AA’cstporf Aniatcui Athletic Club’s sports meeting this afternoon was the running of Miss Fay Gudsell, the Canterbury provincial woman champion, who won the 75yds., also her heat mid the final in the 100yds.
