SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Middle Distance Title Won by Thwaites, Lyall Bay EVENTS AT MASTERTON Dominion Special Service. .Masterton, March 17. Ideal conditions, the large number ot Wellington competitors who made the trip, and the fine work of Mr. W. -B. Dickson, club president, as starter, went a long way to make «ie swimming carnival in the Dixon Street Baths to-night an unqualified success. There was a large attendance of tlie public, every available seating space being occupied. The officials*, who were ably assisted by Mr. N. N. Oldershaw, honorary secretary of the Wellington centre, and Mr. N. McCartney, a member of the centre carried out their task well and kept the long programme up to schedule time. The main event of tlie evening was the Wellington SSOyds. tree-style provincial championship, in which J. K. Thwaites, of the Lyall Baj' club, showed his true colours as a middle-distance swimmer by winning by a length and a quarter of tlie bath, which ie 25 yards in length. An early hot pace spelt disaster to the Masterton hope, Jaek Barnes, who. however, performed very well for his first attempt over the distance. He proved later in the evening when swimming for Masterton A in the relay race to be a sprinter of no mean ability.

Miss I’. Price was unfortunate to be beaten by J. Penman. She made only one mistake, misjudging the distance of the water from the low board, which was only three feet above the water level. Otherwise her display was perfect. Penman made one error that should have been costly to him. The Wairarapa primary schools* championship was won by a promising lad in R. Hendry, who holds Mr. A. A. Wilson’s challenge cup for 12 months. The handicapping might have been a little better, particularly in the 100yds. relay event.

in which the Wellington teams, Hutt, and Lyall Bay, were called upon to give away too much time to strong opposition. , The Wellington party, comprising members of the Lyall Bay, Hutt and AVellington clubs, returned home altei the carnival. . . . Both Plank and Pelham improved then positions during the next two laps, and I lank took the lead from Barnes in the ni nth It was here that he began to set a hot pace for Barnes, the Masterton boy making the mistake of going with him O'er such a long journey. Pelham also let himself go. and nt the touch of the tenth was un with Barnes. Thwaites. Barnes kept with 11‘tnk over the next two laps, and in the thirteenth the AVellington club representative withdrew, leaving Barnes with a yard tlie advantage of J’"'. 1 Thwaites. with N. Milligan (Lyall, Bay) close up. There was no alteration tn he following two laps. Pelham withdrew in tlie sixteenth, where Thwaites hit ne front. Barnes tiring. Milligan, who was also swimming well, improved his IK’ 81 " tion. and was now barely a yard belnml Barnes. Thwaites had the race in his keeping and outclassed the opposition to win bv a lap and a quarter of the baths (about 31 yards). The winner, who was a member ot the AVellington College Maxwell Trophy relay team of last year, is only 1( years ot age, and his fine achievement earned lrm much applause. This was the first occasion Thwaites had been over the distance. There was a keen tussle between Barnes and Milligan for. second place, Barnes gaining the verdict by a touch. Milligan fouled the finishing rope in the last lap. and lost at least two feet, giving Barnes that advantage at the touch His performance in catching Barnes over the concluding four yards was a fine e nk>rt. Milligan is also 17 years of age. Hie time was announced as 10.50. Obviously the clocks were out of order, as the time given was something in tlie vicinity of a world record, for tiie distance.
