CODEX CLAIMED
Monastery on Mount Sinai REQUEST FOR RETURN (Received January 30, 11.35 p.m.) London, January 30. The Archbishop of Sinai has telegraphed to the British Museum requesting the return of the Codex Siuaiticus. which, lie says, the British public must know, belongs to the monastery on Mount Sinai. The telegram does nor mention pay me nt. A London message states that the British Museum refuses to recognise the Archbishop of Sinai’s claim. It points out that Archbishop Callis! nil os in 1869 definitely assigned Hie Codex to tlie Russian Emperor and specially thanked the scholar Tisclieudord for his intervention In the matter. The monastery nt the time was drawing £lO.OOO a year income from property in Russia.
