OBITUARY

Mr. Richard Mitchell The death is reported from Pahiatua by “Dominion” Special Service, of Mr. Richard Mitchell, of Nikau, at the age of 79 years. Born at* Cubet, Cornwall, England, he came to New Zealand in the ship Inverness nearly sixty years ago. He followed farming pursuits in the Hastings district for some time, and was married iu that town. He was for some years in the employ of the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. When the Bush district was being opened up, he was among the first to draw a section at Nikau. There he carved a home for himself out of the bush, and experienced, most of the vicissitudes associated with early colonisation. With other settlers he assisted in the formation of roads in the Nikau district. He is survived by a family of four sons and three daughters. His wife predeceased him some 10 years ago. Mr. A. H. Knigge The death occurred at his residence, Wellington Road, Marton, yesterday morning, of Mr. August Hermann Knigge, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Marton. The late Mr. Knigge Was born In Wellington 70 years ago. He was a member of the Post and Telegraph Department staff for some time, later taking up farming. A prominent Wellington footballer and cricketer, he continued to show interest in these sports in Marton, and right up to last season often acted as umpire at local matches. He married a sister of Mr. H. H. Richardson, of Marton. He farmed for some years in the Hutt Valley, and, disposing of his land, he went to Marton. In 1907 he was appointed Marton town clerk, a position he held for 22 years, retiring in 1929 owing to ill-health. He served under no fewer than six mayors. The late Mr. Knigge was secretary of the school committee for many years. He was also secretary to the Marton poultry show. A widow and one son and one daughter are left —Mrs. A. C M. Parkinson (Marton) and Mr. H. G. Knigge (Wellington).
