FIRST CRICKET TEST

M.C.C. Defeats India

AMARNATH’S CENTURY

Calcutta, December 18.

A complete collapse when a fine partnership between Amarnath and Nayudu was broken led to the defeat of India in the first Test with M.C.C. at Bombay by nine wickets,. Amarnath scored a. century, the feat arousing great enthusiasm. Commencing their second innings, India’s representatives were faced with the formidable task of wiping out a deficit of 219 runs on the first innings, the M.C.C. tourists having doubled India’s score. Two wickets went cheaply, but then Amarnath and Nayudu established a third-wicket partnership which effected a big improvement in India’s position. These two batsmen added 186 runs before being separated. At one stage the score was 207 for two wickets; but by lunch time four niofe wickets had fallen for the addition of only 18 runs. The remaining four wickets yielded only 33 runs, the side being all out for 258, to which total Amarnath contributed 118 and Nayudu 67. Defeat by an innings had been averted, but the M.C.C. made the winning runs at a cost of only one wicket.

Amarnath, the Lahore centurymaker, became the hero of the hour, and it is stated reliably that he has already been offered an aggregate sum of £1540 by wealthy admirers. Hysterical women divested themselves of costly jewels and bangles and flung them at the young test cricketer. The scores were as follow:— INDIA. First innings . 219 Second Innings. Wazir, AU, c.
