BYRD’ EXPEDITION

Good Progress Reported

INTEREST IN “KLONDIKE”

(Special to the Press Association from the Byrd Expedition.)

Jacob Ruppert (at sea), Dec. 17.

The members of the Byrd expedition enjoyed a novel experience in having two Thursdays on December 14 when they crossed the one hundred and eightieth meridian on that date. Since then the Jacob Ruppert made good cruising time. On Friday she was 1200 miles from Wellington, a fresh north-westerly wind aiding the vessel. She passed through the roaring forties without mishap. The barometer falling indicates a possible storm. Low temperatures caused the look-out for icebergs to be doubled. What is attracting interest is the fact that the Guernsey cow named Klondike is an expectant mother. There is considerable difference of opinion among the cow handlers and others as to when the interesting event may be expected, but all agree that it will be within tlie Antarctic Circle, thus giving Klondike an immortality within the bovine world comparable with Mrs. O’Lear>’s cow whose kicking over of a lantern started the great Chicago fire. ■
