A LARGER STAGE

Alterations at Concert Chamber

For some years past the stage of the Concert Chamber of the Town Hail has been unsatisfactory for theatrical performances, dance recitals, and similar entertainments, on account of the cramped conditions. These are caused by the stage itself having been given solid immovable timber and plaster side walls, which, with curtains or scenery in use, leave scarcely any room for exits or entrances. The reason for that is that, when built, the Concert Chamber was Intended only for concerts and lectures.

The fault is now being corrected. A start was made yesterday with the demolition of both side walls, and the taking of the curve out of the top of the back wall. The inner part of the original proscenium walls is also being removed. This will give space for a greatl?--enlarged stage, with ample room for scenery, exits and entrances. The lower dressing-room on the prompt eastern side of the stage, and the floor of the stage is being extended out to the side wall of the chamber. The dimensions of the dressing-room on the opposite side will also be curtailed by the stage enlargement. A general clean-up of the walls of the Concert Chamber is also in progress.
