Several Deaths in Poland CANALS IN NORTH FRANCE FROZEN By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received December 14, 7.30 p.m.) London, December 14. Reports of intensely cold weather come from all parts of the Continent. In Venice 18 inches ’of snow fell. Trieste experienced a blizzard. Several people were frozen to death in Poland. In Switzerland snow is falling heavily, and in northern France hundreds of miles of canals are frozen. In Vienna a cake at a wedding party was broken with* an axe, and the guests thawed their portions by the fire. FIERCE GALE Severe in English Channel (British Official Wireless.) (Received December 14, 7 p.m.) Rugby, December 13. The fiercest gale of the winter swept the British coasts to-day and was particularly severe in the English Channel. Some cross-Channel boats were diverted from Dover to Calais and sailings were curtailed. Those crossing experienced the roughest weather this winter. Lifeboats around the coasts had many calls and some anxiety was. for i> time felt for the large Finnish-owned four-masted barque Lawhill, which left London last week for Australia and will take part in the annual grain race next year. Off Deal the Lawhill dropped her anchors and held her position 400 yards off shore until a Dover tug towed her clear. The cross-Channel cargo service was cancelled. Several fishing boats are overdue.
