IN LOW WATER
Mayor’s Distress Fund
DEPOTS CLOSED DOWN
The Jlayor’s Distress Fund, which has been a valued source of relief to the unemployed and their dependents during the last three years, is in low water. As funds are becoming scarce and donations of food supplies from firms, farmers, and private people have ceased, It has already been found necessary to close down the free food depots, and to reduce allocations to the various inter-church committees, which disburse foodstuffs to the needy of their respective districts. Unless means are taken to secure additional funds for this purpose it is likely that the fund will be altogether depleted in a few weeks’ time.
As there are so many appeals before the public for funds, and as it is so near Christmas, it is felt to be rather difficult to launch a new appeal at present. It was hoped that Prosperity Week and the Confidence Carnival might have yielded something substantial for the fund, but in both cases the return has been! disappointing despite the amount of hard work and enthusiasm expended upon those efforts.
